It all began with a simple idea. Let's buy a vineyard! After moving out west in 2011 from NY, there was a force pulling us towards this business. Having checked out a couple properties, we landed on a beautiful 13 (now 20) acre site towards the end of 2018. With an excellent reputation for producing high quality fruit for over 20 years throughout Murphys and Calaveras County in the Sierra Foothills - we instantly knew this was the place.
Learning the business from the ground up with a GoPro camera, notes, courses, and plenty of conversations led to a journey that continues to be uplifting, challenging and absolutely incredible all at once.
We hope you enjoy this glimpse into our family business from the very first moment our kids set foot on the property, to us learning how to manage a vineyard and make wine from scratch.
What began as a passion to learn has now morphed into a vineyard with seven acres in full production, and Rothman Wines rolling out its first wine under its own brand - The 2021 Rothman Petite Sirah. Stay tuned for our next release which will be the 2023 Rothman Tempranillo.
We hope you'll enjoy taking this journey with us for many years to come.

Both of our daughters and son checking out a rock pile at the Vineyard. Since it was a mine back in the day, rock piles of all types can be found. You can even hear frogs in the pond below the tree behind them. They might even be signing a song about our first release of Rothman Wine.

During the first year, no time was wasted maintaining the beautiful rose bushes at the end of each row. She also does a phenomenal job running the calculations required for BRIX, pH and Malolactic testing during the winemaking process. The very early stage of Rothman Wines.
Our dog Jasmine helps to keep the deer away and occasionally jumps in the pond (that she's not supposed to be in) just to cool off. She keeps the Syrah, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah, Barbera, and Malbec red wine grapes safe so that we can produce Rothman Wines.
There is nothing like learning how to operate a tractor - especially when you are loading 1000 pound grape bins, or watching the PTO break off while using the flail mower.
After reading books, taking UC Davis courses, and just going for it, we spent three years learning everything from crushing the grapes, to punching down, pressing, racking, filtering, bottling, corking, and labeling. The bottles you see above were made just for fun and family. The experience helped us to choose a phenomenal winemaker with a great reputation.
